how do you begin a career in wine?

i want to begin a career in wine, possibly getting a job at a winery and i am wondering what degree or qualifications are needed in order to do so.

If you want a start in winemaking there are two ways to go about (at least).
Go to work at a winery as a 'cellar rat'; an entry-level hose and tank man. Lots of top winemakers began this way.
or
Get an oenology degree at some insitution of higher education, ie. UC Davis or such and go peddle your resume.

If you just want to get in the wine business, get a job at a wine merchant's shop. You'll learn more there in 6 months that you could in 6 years studying on your own, attending tasting, etc.
Plus you'll meet a gazillion people in the biz which will open many doors for you. This can lead to outside sales, wine education, sommelier work and all kinds of hangovers.
